Wendell B. Sumter is a pastor, educator, and leadership speaker from South Carolina who has spent more than 30 years helping people grow—spiritually, personally, and professionally. He is the author of Dirt Road Destiny: From Humble Beginnings to Resilient Leadership, a message rooted in faith, perseverance, and purpose. 

 Raised in the close-knit community of Hopkins, SC, Wendell’s journey was shaped by humble beginnings and a deep commitment to service. His ministry began at Zion Benevolent Baptist Church, where he served as Associate Pastor for five years. Ordained to preach in 1990, he has faithfully served as Pastor of Zion Mill Creek Baptist Church in Columbia, SC, since February 1993. Under his leadership, the church has experienced meaningful growth in membership, ministry initiatives, and community impact. 

Wendell has dedicated over three decades to public education as a teacher, school leader, and advocate for student success. He earned a Bachelor of Science in Elementary Education from Morris College and a master’s degree in education from the University of South Carolina. He taught second, fourth, and sixth grades, always focused on academic excellence and personal development.

He later served in school administration as Assistant Principal at Lower Richland High School and as Principal of Great Falls Middle School and Great Falls Elementary School. During his leadership, both schools earned major recognition, including designation as a Microsoft Showcase School and receiving SC Title I Distinguished School for Progress and National Title I Distinguished School honors.  Wendell currently serves as Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources for Chester County School District in Chester, SC, leading efforts in educator recruitment, retention, and professional development. His work supports district-wide excellence by strengthening the people and systems that help students succee 

Wendell has served as a Learning Specialist with the Northwest Council for Computer Education (NCCE) and worked as a consultant with NCCE and Microsoft. A former member of the Microsoft Education Advisory Board, he has traveled internationally—presenting in places such as Prague, Spain, Amsterdam, and India—encouraging educators, students, and leaders through practical insight and inspiration.

As a motivational speaker and morale booster, Wendell is passionate about helping people reach their fullest potential. His messages blend real-life storytelling with leadership principles—helping audiences build resilience, strengthen culture, and lead with purpose. He believes every child can learn and every person can grow, and he challenges audiences to pursue what once felt unreachable.
